NBC announces that Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been renewed for a seventh season. After Fox cancelled the single-camera cop comedy at the end of five seasons, the network scooped the show back up almost immediately and promoted its sixth season extensively leading up to its winter premiere. When it re-launched alongside NBC flagship comedies The Good Place and Will & Grace, fans of the Nine-Nine poured out to celebrate the show’s return, delivering a big ratings win. The show returned with its principle cast, including Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Chelsea Peretti, and Andre Braugher.
Although Peretti made an emotional exit as a regular early in the season, its since been confirmed that she’ll be seen again this year. Dirk Blocker and Joel McKinnon Miller, who play sideline detectives Hitchcock and Scully, have since been added to the opening credits sequence. The sixth season has successfully entered its classic themes and gags, including a Rubick’s cube murder mystery bamboozling Jake (Samberg) and Rosa (Beatriz), and a traditional appearance from Doug Judy, aka. the Pontiac Bandit. The show also continues to explore social discrimination, such as through Rosa’s navigation of biphobia, and Amy (Fumero)’s experience of sexual harassment in an episode set to air tomorrow.
NBC made the announcement, crediting the show as its now top-rated sitcom. The seventh season will presumably premiere in the Fall, along with the also renewed The Good Place, Will & Grace, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Chicago Med, and New Amsterdam. Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, Co-Presidents of Scripted Programming, congratulated the series’ creators and writers (via TV Line): “It’s been one of our great joys as a network to give Brooklyn Nine-Nine a second life. Cheers to Dan Goor, Mike Schur, Luke Del Tredici and David Miner, and our amazing cast and crew who each week turn New York’s finest into New York’s funniest.” The official Brooklyn Nine-Nine Twitter account posted the moment the announcement was made to the staff, and Beatriz posted a cast reaction to the news. Keeping long-running sitcoms, no matter how well written they may be, from becoming stale and formulaic is always a challenge. So this extension to Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s life begs questions about what lies next for the precinct’s characters. If it had been the end, season six could easily have wrapped up by bringing Captain Holt (Braugher) to victory in his goal to become police commissioner, but obviously that didn’t happen.
While Amy and Terry (Crews) continue to work towards their next career moves as sergeant and lieutenant respectively, other storyline opportunities that take Jake, Rosa, and Charles (Lo Truglio) in directions other than strict detective work may emerge shortly. There’s also the possibility that Jake and Amy, in the time-honored tradition of sitcom central romances, may decide to start a family. Whatever direction the next season takes, it’s clear from the love of the fans that their next adventures are already much-anticipated. Nine-nine!
