On The Hills: New Beginnings finale, Brody Jenner and Kaitlynn Carter clarify the open marriage rumors circulating throughout the group. The then-married couple dish on their unconventional relationship.
Jenner was first brought into the public eye when he joined the original The Hills in its second season when he dated the show’s starlet - Lauren Conrad. In 2019, nearly 10 years after the original show aired, MTV rebooted the show with The Hills: New Beginnings, Jenner is back on the show unofficially married to his longtime girlfriend, Carter, with a beautiful ceremony in June of 2018 in Indonesia. The Hills reboot has shown glimpses of them struggling throughout their one-year-long marriage, as they are conflicting over when they should start a family or not. The pair have separated earlier last month and both Jenner and Carter are already moving on with new relationships - Carter with her fling with pop-star Miley Cyrus and Jenner with Victoria’s Secret Model Josie Canseco.
Even though the pair have split and are moving on just fine without each other, the finale (via People) showed fans more insight as to how the split happened. In previous episodes, it showed the group wondering about the couple’s polyamorous relationship, in which they played coy. On the season finale, Carter went into more detail about her open relationship with Jenner after being pressed by co-star Ashley Wahler about the rumors regarding Jenner sleeping around with other women. Wahler cut right to the chase, asking Carter, “So does Brody have sex with other women?” Carter told her the truth, saying, “Not without me being involved, okay?” She continued, “Everything with me and Brody is under my control - let’s put it that way.”
Carter then spoke to the cameras about the situation, defending her unorthodox relationship with Jenner, saying, “There’s not one part of our relationship that I’m ashamed of or that I would do differently.” She went onto explain why she hasn’t opened up about their polyamorous relationship before, saying, “I just think that the world isn’t necessarily ready to hear about all that. Not everybody is so open-minded or accepting of other people.” She defends her lifestyle with Jenner, saying, “As long as what we’re doing is working for us, that’s the most important thing.” As fans now know, there must have been aspects of their relationship that didn’t work, because the two split and seem happier than ever.
The two are have remained friends, even Carter and her new flame Cyrus bought Jenner a weed bouquet for his 36th birthday just weeks after the split. They have expressed how this decision was the best for both of them. Now that the season is over, there aren’t many more clues as to why the pair split as they both seemed to enjoy being in an open relationship. Now that season 1 of The Hills: New Beginnings is officially over, fans can only hope there will be a season 2 in order to catch up with Jenner and Carter post-split.
