Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan says that he is more than happy to revisit the character of Jesse Pinkman, who could return to TV… one day.
As the meth-dealing assistant to Walter White, Aaron Paul played Pinkman for all 62 episodes of AMC’s violent thriller. As the network continues to move forward with spin-off show Better Call Saul, there is every chance Pinkman could return in a flashback fashion, but it sounds like Gilligan is more inclined to pick up where we left the character when Breaking Bad ended in 2013.
Looking back on the show to celebrate its 10th anniversary, Gilligan spoke to Digital Spy where he teased what the future could hold for Jesse now that he is free from the rule of Walter White.:
He then went on to speculate where he thinks Jesse would be now:
“You never know if that character may get revisited in the future. Anything’s possible.”
“There could have been police right around the next corner. Or there could have been an unfettered, free future for him. I personally would like to think he got away, because he paid his dues tenfold. I like to believe he got away. I don’t really know in terms of what he should be doing as a career. I just hope he would get away, and meet somebody nice, and not be a criminal anymore and not face those horrors that he faced. I always liked that character. I always had a soft spot for him.”
Known for his unofficial catchphrase of just “b***h,” the down-and-out Pinkman became a fan-favorite of the show and the de facto second lead. Even with Jesse living in the shadow of Walter White, it didn’t stop Paul from shining alongside Bryan Cranston as a comedy double act. However, while it would be nearly impossible to bring Walt back (he died in the finale ‘Felina), Pinkman’s cliffhanger ending is just crying out for more.
While Gilligan decided to put a definitive end to Walt’s story, Jesse was last seen fleeing the bloodbath of ‘Felina’ as Walt gunned down the White Supremacists. There was an emotional farewell between Walt and Jesse, then Pinkman sped off to freedom before the police arrive. It is assumed that Jesse would be a wanted man these days, which could even lend itself to a perfect continuation of the series. However, while many would love to see Jesse back on their screens, would a show still work without the dynamic of Pinkman butting heads with a ruthless Heisenberg? Either way, at least Gilligan has at least thought about his comedic creation since the credits rolled.
Obviously, any show would depend on whether Paul would be willing to reprise the role, but the actor is more than happy to discuss his fond time on the show and share frequent posts about Breaking Bad on social media. Also, let’s not forget that Netflix’s Black Mirror had a cameo from the 38-year-old in the episode ‘USS Callister’ which channeled an awful lot of his Pinkman days. Add to this that Paul has previously said he would love to cameo on Better Call Saul, why wouldn’t he want his own spin-off series to star in? Even if we don’t move ahead with a full Breaking Bad sequel, there is still every opportunity that Pinkman could be worked into Better Call Saul. Who knows, maybe he’s also working at a Cinnabon in Omaha?
