Welcome to the Screen Rant Box Office Prediction. Every week we put together an informal list of box office picks for the upcoming weekend to offer readers a rough estimate of how new releases (and returning holdovers) will perform in theaters.

For a recap of last week’s box office totals, read our box office wrap-up from Power Ranger’s opening weekend, and scroll to the bottom of this post to see how our picks matched up.

Full disclosure: Box office predictions are not an exact science. We acknowledge our picks may not always be correct. For the sake of offering a jumping off point for discussion, here are our picks for the weekend of March 31 - April 2, 2017.

This weekend, Ghost in the Shell opens in 3,440 theaters and The Boss Baby premieres in 3,773 locations.

#1 - Beauty and the Beast

Coming in the top spot for the third week in a row should be Beauty and the Beast (read our review), which has dominated the marketplace since it opened on March 17. To date, the live-action remake has grossed $341.8 million domestically and is showing no signs of slowing down as it faces minimal competition during the early portion of its run. Disney has certainly capitalized on the popularity of the beloved animated classic, and odds are it will continue to thrive. None of this week’s new releases are arriving in theaters with much fan fare, so there really isn’t anything that stands in Beauty’s way as it looks for a three-peat.

#2 - The Boss Baby

Our pick for second is The Boss Baby (read our review), the latest film from DreamWorks Animation. The studio has found plenty of success at the box office over the years, most recently with last fall’s Trolls ($153.6 million). They’re rarely breaking records, but DreamWorks has a solid reputation of delivering safe family entertainment, which is usually a formula that yields solid results. Granted, they haven’t topped $200 million domestically since 2012, but they’re nevertheless consistent and don’t have many outright bombs on their résumé.

Boss Baby should be a continuation of that trend. The generally mixed critical response, which paints it as nothing more than a generic animated movie, isn’t going to do it any favors commercially (particularly with Smurfs: The Lost Village premiering next week), but it’s been a while since there was a new animated film in town (LEGO Batman was back in mid-February), so there could be some demand to see what DreamWorks has in store. Beauty and the Beast is currently sweeping through the family demographic, but Boss Baby is a different option for youngsters uninterested in the romantic musical. Projections indicate an opening weekend of about $32 million.

#3 - Ghost in the Shell

Coming in third should be Ghost in the Shell (read our review), the adaptation of the popular anime starring Scarlett Johansson as Major. Though Johansson’s casting led to a whitewashing controversy that the film was never able to escape from, the hope going in was that her involvement could give the project some commercial appeal - especially in the Western regions. Johansson, of course, is a leading figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Black Widow and was also the lead in Luc Besson’s hit Lucy ($126.6 million). She’s carved out a niche as one of the leading action heroines today, so Ghost in the Shell could be the next big role for her.

However, things seem to be a mixed bag, at least domestically. Critics are impressed with the movie’s visuals, but not so much the story. Star power can only go so far when the word-of-mouth isn’t all that great, so it will be interesting to see how that impacts Ghost in the Shell’s prospects. Things might have been different if the reception was stronger, but it looks like the movie is going to have an uphill climb at the box office as it deals with some high-profile holdovers. Estimates are suggesting an opening weekend in the $28 million range, so Paramount will need this to do very well in the international markets in order to spawn a new franchise.

#4 - Power Rangers

Falling to fourth should be Power Rangers (read our review), which debuted last week with $40.3 million. Though the reboot got off to a nice start, it’s unlikely to hang around the top of the charts for long. Like some other releases this month, Power Rangers was hit with a mixed critical reception that seemed to limit its overall appeal. Established fans of the mighty morphin’ heroes were up to see the new take, but it didn’t attract many beyond that group. Now that the movie is out and the hype is dying down, business should start to decline a bit.

#5 - Kong: Skull Island

Rounding out the top five should be Kong: Skull Island (read our review), which came in third last week with $14.6 million. The Eighth Wonder of the World has posted solid returns at the box office so far, but it’s fallen off a little since its $61 million debut. With a couple new releases this week, that trend should continue.
